Cleaning up someone else’s mess is never a fun job, but if you find that some unruly person has decided to spray graffiti on the sandstone surfaces of your home you’ll want to clean it up as quickly as possible to prevent the paint from staining the stone. Follow these instructions the moment you spot the graffiti and you’ll be sure to remove the stain:
Step 1: Vigorously wash the surface of the affected sandstone using clean water from a garden hose. This will help to remove any other dirt or debris that has accumulated on the surface, making the paint easier to get to.
Step 2: Take a wooden scraper and use it to remove as much of the paint as possible. You will then need to leave the surface to dry.
Step 3: Take some paint stripper and apply it to the painted areas of sandstone using an old paintbrush. You will need to leave the stripper to sit on the stone until the paint has been completely removed.
Step 4: Once you are sure that as much of the paint as possible (if not all of it) has been removed, you can rinse the sandstone with the garden hose.
Step 5: If you were unable to remove all of the paint with the stripper alone, you can add a poultice to the affected areas of the sandstone. Making sure that you use an absorbent material (such as a baking powder or flour paste), apply it to the sandstone and leave to dry.
Whatever you do when it comes to removing paint and graffiti from your sandstone, do not use any acid based cleaners, as these can absolutely ruin the surface of your stone. You should also wear protective gloves when handling paint stripper, as it is a dangerous chemical.
